Set Your 2018 New Year's Resolutions

New year, new you! The closing out of one year and the beginning of another is the perfect opportunity to set some resolutions for the coming months. Take a moment to reflect on 2017. Did you accomplish the things you wanted? Maybe you had the best year ever, or perhaps you feel as though you fell short of your goals – that’s ok! Now’s the time to set some expectations for yourself and start fresh. Whether you’ve been wanting to shed those extra pounds, conquer a fear, or just try something new, it’s never too late. We’ve compiled a list of resolutions for 2018 that may help inspire yours!

Travel more
There’s nothing quite like traveling. It’s an opportunity to experience somewhere new, with each country, city, or even small charming town having something different to offer. From outdoor recreation and history, to cuisine and culture, there’s a unique component to every destination. Here in Dutchess, we have a bit of it all! Especially if you’ve never been, we encourage you to come for a visit and find out what makes us Distinctly Dutchess. Below are a few things our community prides itself on, and we can’t wait for you to come experience them for yourself!

Learn to cook
Some people just have a natural talent for cooking, others have to work at it. If you’re one of those people who doesn’t even know where to begin, try taking a cooking class this year to improve your skills. Dutchess is home to the world’s top culinary school, The Culinary Institute of America.  Offering cooking, baking and wine classes for beginners, you can learn from some of the most talented chefs in the region. Looking for a more form-to-table approach? Sprout Creek Farm hosts a variety of instructional classes. From pasta and bread, to stews and braises, learn the basics to start building your confidence in the kitchen.

Conquer your fear of heights
Often times we can find personal growth by stepping out of your comfort zone. Let us help you conquer one of your biggest fears this year – heights. The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is a living museum located in Rhinebeck with an impressive collection of old aircrafts from the Pioneer Era, World War I and Golden Age of Aviation – many of which still fly today. It’s a remarkable place, whether you’re interested in airplane history or not! You’ll have some time to build up the courage as it’s not open through the winter. It opens for the season from May 1 through October 31. During this time, you can stroll through the museum, purchase tickets to an airshow, or take an open cockpit biplane ride! Conquer your fear and soar up into the clouds as you look down on breathtaking views of the Hudson Valley.

Get in shape
This resolution may be common, but it’s important! Feeling like your best self is crucial in not only physical health, but mental and emotional health, too. Eating healthy and working out is proven to help relieve stress and increase endorphins. Luckily, Dutchess is known for its outdoor recreation. From running trails and bike paths, to kayaking and tennis courts, there’s plenty of options for staying active. Check out the outdoors page on our website for more ideas. One great way to get motivated is to sign up for a race – 5K, 10K, half marathon, who knows! Set some fitness goals and get out there and push your limits. You may even surprise yourself! Check the Mid-Hudson Road Runners Club or Fleet Feet Poughkeepsie websites for upcoming local races.

We hope we’ve given you some inspiration for setting goals to make 2018 the best year yet. We’d love to hear from you and help you plan your visit to Dutchess County. Happy New Year!
