Learn to Cook
Some people just have a natural talent for cooking, and others have to work at it. If you’re one of those people who doesn’t even know where to begin, try taking a cooking class this year to improve your skills. Dutchess is home to the world’s top culinary school, The Culinary Institute of America. Offering cooking, baking and wine classes for beginners, you can learn from some of the most talented chefs in the region. Looking for a more form-to-table approach? Sprout Creek Farm hosts a variety of instructional classes. From pasta and bread, to stews and braises, learn the basics to start building your confidence in the kitchen.
Conquer Your Fears
Often times we can find personal growth by stepping out of your comfort zone. Let us help you conquer one of your biggest fears this year – heights. The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is a living museum located in Rhinebeck with an impressive collection of old aircrafts from the Pioneer Era, World War I and Golden Age of Aviation – many of which still fly today. It’s a remarkable place, whether you’re interested in airplane history or not! You’ll have some time to build up the courage as it’s not open through the winter. It opens for the season from May 1 through October 31. During this time, you can stroll through the museum, purchase tickets to an airshow, or take an open cockpit biplane ride! Not interested in taking to the skies? Climb one of our hiking fire towers, whether it be on top Mount Beacon, Ferncliff Forest or Stissing Mountain. Whichever you choose, conquer your fear and enjoy sweeping scenic views of the Hudson Valley.
Improve Your Fitness
This resolution may be common, but it’s important! Feeling like your best self is crucial in not only physical health, but mental and emotional health, too. Eating healthy and working out is proven to help relieve stress and increase endorphins. Luckily, Dutchess is known for its outdoor recreation. From running trails and bike paths, to kayaking and tennis courts, there’s plenty of options for staying active. Check out the outdoors page on our website for trail recommendations, bike routes and more. One great way to get motivated is to sign up for a race – 5K, 10K, half marathon, who knows! Set some fitness goals and get out there and push your limits. You may even surprise yourself! Check the Mid-Hudson Road Runners Club or Fleet Feet Poughkeepsie websites for upcoming local races.
Carve Out More ‘Me Time’
We live in a world that doesn’t stop. Everyone is constantly go go go and always connected by technology. Make an effort to unplug more this year and set some time aside for yourself. Whether that means a day at the spa, a relaxing yoga class, or perhaps even a salt cave session, there are a number of ways to reset and enjoy some zen.
We hope we’ve given you some inspiration for setting goals to make 2019 the best year yet. We’d love to hear from you and help you plan your visit to Dutchess County. Happy New Year!
