Celebrate Thanksgiving in Beautiful Dutchess County

Date Published: October 17, 2018

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it’s time to plan your holiday dinner. Most people associate it with home cooking, but dining out on the holiday is big business in the US. According to the National Restaurant Association, 10% of Americans eat out on the long weekend associated with gratitude, with young millennials especially prone to leaving the dishes to someone else. Are you ready to join the movement of eating out on Turkey Day?

Did you know it became a national holiday in 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln, in the midst of the Civil War, proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day was to be held each November?

The first Thanksgiving was in November 1621, when the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared a harvest feast to celebrate the success of the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest. Their celebration is said to have lasted for three days.

You can give thanks for three or four days by spending a long weekend enjoying the Dutchess County’s impressive scenic beauty. Make time for friends and family. Start your holiday shopping at our museum stores, specialty shops and galleries. Be amazed and impressed by the fabulous Christmas decorations at our Great Estates and historic homesteads. The Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park, connected to the Dutchess Rail Trail, is open daily for you to walk off that turkey dinner. You might even cut down your Christmas tree at one of our tree farms.

As for your 2018 Thanksgiving feast, check out these area restaurants ready to serve you a delicious holiday dinner, making it easy for people coming together from near and far. Or, pick up a feast already prepared and meet at a local relative’s home. If you’re going to dine in a restaurant, all of these recommend you make a reservation.
