Offering both indoor and outdoor dining options, The Governess is a prime location for admiring the beauty and majesty of the Hudson River and the surrounding highlands, especially in the autumn, when the Hudson Valley is ablaze with colorful foliage. Opened in July of 2024, The Governess occupies an old riverfront icehouse where ice was once stored and shipped after being harvested from the Hudson. Its vintage decor evokes memories of a riverfront culture from decades past. The menu includes plenty of American classics — steaks, burgers, seafood, chicken wings and salads — along with a few mouthwatering twists on some traditional favorites, like the Lava Macaroni, which is made with six different cheeses and topped with the pretzel crumbs. Select from an expansive list of craft beers, including several local favorites. The Governess is within walking distance of the Poughkeepsie train station, which offers Metro-North and Amtrak service, as well as Upper Landing Park, which features a 21-story, glass-enclosed elevator that will carry you up to the deck of the Walkway Over the Hudson some 212 feet overhead.
