Named after Catheryna Rombout Brett -- who, along with her husband, Roger, were the first European settlers in present-day Beacon -- Madam Brett Park features 12 acres on the banks of Fishkill Creek, along which once stood a gristmill owned by Catheryna, who was widowed at age 31 when Roger drowned in the Hudson River. In the 1800s, Fishkill Creek powered several hat-making factories, including the historic 1879 Tioranda Hat Works, whose brick ruins still stand adjacent to the park.
