Organized as part of Black History Month at Bard College and co-curated by Aliyah Hyman (Bard '27) and CCS Bard Executive Director Tom Eccles, "The Message is the Medium" features two recent acquisitions from the Marieluise Hessel Collection by Terry Adkins and Ja'Tovia Gary.
Adkins' "Progressive Nature Studies" and Gary's "Giverny I (Negresse Imperiale)" are shown in tandem, highlighting a longstanding history of Black Americans recognizing the gaps in the art historical canon and utilizing their practice as a means to assert Black autonomy, as well as to solidify or reconstruct an alternative perspective on the role of Blackness within the history of artmaking.
The exhibition will be on display from Jan. 22Feb. 23.
