ZviDance Celebrates Kerouac's Classic "On the Road" at Kaatsbaan April 22 & 23
ZviDance performs its multimedia On the Road at Kaatsbaan International Dance Center on April 22 and 23. Galvanized by Jack Kerouac’s classic road-trip novel, a hallmark exploration of the post-war Beat Generation, artistic director Zvi Gotheiner intertwines collaborative choreography with an original score by Jukka Rintamaki and kaleidoscopic video design by Josh Higgason.
The result is “a sensual, organic world of movement, language, and images where one is pulled along by currents unseen,” says Dance Magazine.
Hailing from an agrarian Israeli kibbutz, Gotheiner immigrated to New York after winning a dance scholarship at age 24. He said, “Kerouac’s On The Road opened up new lifestyle possibilities far more experimental and spontaneous than mine.”
On the Road is “a danced meditation on youth, freedom, and the call of the open road” observed The New York Times.
He and collaborators have sculpted material improvised during their own road trip, one they undertook to retrace the tire treads of Kerouac and his Beat buddies on their first euphoric wander westward to San Francisco in the late ’40s.
Founded in 1989, ZviDance has received NEA awards, performed at the Joyce Theater, Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, SummerStage, Jacob’s Pillow, the American Dance Festival, and toured from the Americas to Germany, Japan, Poland, and Russia.

ZviDance’s inter-disciplinary works explore “a passionate vision of community in a modern age, boldly addressing the depths of human experience,” says Gotheiner, who is attracted to the cutting edge. Past works include Surveillance, a chilling multimedia piece that blurs the lines between voyeur and exhibitionist.
ZviDance is no stranger to Kaatsbaan. They’ve been in residence and graced the Kaatsbaan stage numerous times over the years. In the 15 years since its first performance at Kaatsbaan’s Upstream® workshop series, the company has returned eight times to create new works, supported by the NYS Council on the Arts’ long-term residency grants. Since 1990, scores of dance artists have created and showcased new productions at Kaatsbaan.
At the 2014 Starburst of Dance Gala, Zvi Gotheiner, the company’s founder and director, was a recipient of Kaatsbaan’s Playing Field Award, established to recognize dance artists of exceptional talent who’ve expanded their choreographic concepts and developed their professional companies during creative work residencies at the center.
Performances are Saturday, April 22 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, April 23 at 2:30 pm. Tickets are $30. Student Rush and children are $10. Kaatsbaan International Dance Center is located at 120 Broadway in Tivoli. Get your tickets online.
