The Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum and the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site host a series of exciting, patriotic events over Memorial Day Weekend from Friday, May 25 through Monday, May 28, 2018.
On Friday, May 25, at 7 pm in the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum presents one of our Favorite event of the year - its 15th annual USO Show! Patterned after the WWII-era shows put on to entertain American troops serving around the globe, this year's show features two hours of entertainment including live Big Band music from the 1930s and 40s, comedy and juggling, historic newsreels, and much more. It’s a really unique and engaging evening! This evening of family entertainment is the kick-off event for the Memorial Day Weekend programs at the Roosevelt Library and Home. WORLD WAR II ENCAMPMENT & MILITARY DISPLAYS
On Saturday and Sunday, May 26 & 27, the Roosevelt Library and The Duffle Bag of Patterson, New York, present a weekend of historic military displays and a World War II encampment on the Library's front lawn. Re-enactors in battle dress are on hand to share their love of history with you, your family and friends! Collections of military uniforms, weapons, and insignia from 1917 to the present day are all displayed. Customized dog tags are available for purchase, and period military vehicles are on display. Yes, kids can climb all over those jeeps and tanks, so have at it!
This year's encampment also features members of the 240th Military Police Battalion, a National Park Service and Roosevelt Library living history program. The military policemen are on hand all weekend to present the history of their unit, and demonstrate military equipment, including a period communications system. Free, public event.
FIELD OF HONOR® FLAG DISPLAY
From Saturday, May 26 through Monday, May 28, the Hyde Park Education Foundation will host a Field of Honor® flag display at the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site. Hundreds of American flags will fly in a patriotic display honoring veterans, first responders and hometown heroes. Sponsor a flag to honor someone for $45. Free to attend.
ROSE GARDEN MEMORIAL SERVICE
On Memorial Day, May 28, the National Park Service hosts a graveside memorial service at 1:30 pm in the lovely Rose Garden at the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site. Various community organizations present wreaths in honor of President Roosevelt, including American Legion Post #1303, American Legion Post #1466 (presenting a wreath on behalf of the USS Roosevelt DDG 80), Town Of Hyde Park, Dutchess County, Roosevelt-Vanderbilt Historical Association, The Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Partnership, The Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library, and the National Park Service. Free event.
