Menorah Lighting Celebrations in Dutchess County
The celebration of Hanukkah, the eight-day Festival of Lights, commemorates the victory of Hebrew rebels who rose up against occupying Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. It honors the rededication during the 2nd century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem.
Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days to mark the eight days the oil burned. People celebrate by lighting candles on a menorah, which is also called a Hanukiyah. Each night, one more candle is lit. The Shamash is the first candle lit and it is used to light all of the other tapers. In 2018, it runs from Sunday, December 2 - Monday, December 11, and there are several great public lighting ceremonies to attend! Check out some other fun ways to celebrate the holiday as well!
