During Hispanic Heritage Month, Latin Americans express and celebrate their love of an identity that is both multicultural and united by a common language: Spanish. Right now, experience vibrant art reflecting important historical events and taste authentic Latin flavors in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 - Oct. 15, 2020) in Dutchess County!

ARTISTIC AND CULTURAL EXPERIENCES

Start your day with some inspiration by visiting Ecuadorian graffiti artist Lady Pinks mural on the side of Pancho Villa Deli and Mexican Restaurant, at 550 Main Street in Poughkeepsie. Her mural commands the long brick wall along Main Street and depicts not only traditional Mexican images like a sugar-skulled style young girl for Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), but also depicts Central Americans, South Americans, and African Americans in the public piece among an animated landscape. Once you’ve finished admiring this mural, step into Pancho Villa Deli and Mexican Restaurant to experience “El Sabor de Mexico” (the taste of Mexico).

Next, visit Gallery 40’s “Hispanic Flare” Exhibit in Poughkeepsie, which highlights Hispanic culture and celebrates local artists. This exhibition will run until September 30th. Take a deep dive into the migration story with “Miracles on the Border: Retablos of Mexican Migrants to the United States” exhibition at Frances Loeb Art Center at Vassar College. Retablos are devotional paintings typically consecrating a miraculous event. In the exhibit, you’ll find votives — spanning the entirety of the twentieth century — that were offered by Mexican migrants to commemorate their journey to the United States. Continue the celebration at Howland LatinX: An Arts Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month” in Beacon. View pieces by Latinx artists across mediums such as jewelry, sculptures, and paintings. This art show features items for sale and will run until September 27th.

Join the Poughkeepsie Public Library’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and check out the Arts & Crafts from Central and South America display at Adriance Memorial Library on the Ground Floor. Along with the display, they have created a list of contemporary Latinx titles, which you can view here. (A free Poughkeepsie Public Library District card is available to all people who live, work, own property, or attend school in the City or Town of Poughkeepsie.) Or, if you’re looking for a bookstore to pick up one of the suggested titles, read our Top 10 Local Shops for Book Lovers. Tune into their virtual lecture “Raíces Culturales e Independencia” (Cultural Races and Independence) on September 25th and October 2nd,  where you’ll learn about the Native Tribes that once inhabited North and South America. Learn how to make tamales, a traditional Mesoamerican dish, from different countries by joining their virtual cooking lesson “¡La Tamaliza!” on September 26th. For more information click here.
