1. What's your name & where can people find your work?

Website: www.teresahorgan.com  | Instagram: @teresahorganphotography

I am a Hudson Valley photographer located in New Paltz, NY. My specialties are food, events, and portraits. The Hudson Valley has so much to offer for any photographer, that I feel lucky to have the farm-to-table movement here and an incredibly beautiful backdrop for photography.

2. Describe your perfect staycation in Dutchess, or your idea of a fun weekend in the County.

Wow, so much comes to mind. Just having so much to do along the Hudson River is incredible. I often go to places to photograph a wedding or event, and then get a glimpse of a spectacular location, and want to go back on my own time to explore. So, I still have so much to see.  A tasting at Millbrook Vineyards & Winery is definitely on my list. As far as nature, I would love to spend a day exploring the Tivoli Bays and Innisfree Garden.  Other things that I still have not done are touring Bannerman Island and Dia Beacon. Hyde Park is amazing and I never get tired of going to FDR’s home and Presidential library.  Also, I have toured Vanderbilt Mansion, but I would love to tour Clermont State Historic Site and Mills Mansion. Also, I photographed a wedding at the Spiegeltent at Bard, but would love to go back to spend an evening and see a show on my own time. Finally, I still need to have a meal at Terrapin!

3. What equipment do you use in your photography?

My camera is Canon 5D Mark IV. For food, I usually use a 24-105mm lens or a 50mm macro. I will use daylight and black or white cards/foamcore to control the light. If the circumstances do not allow daylight, or the light is not good, I will use flash. Usually, just one light will do, and again using black and white cards/foamcore to add fill or shadow.

4. What is your favorite place to photograph in Dutchess and why?

The Dutchess County Fair is spectacular and fun to photograph. Blithewood Gardens at Bard is a spectacular setting. There is so much variety, that it is hard to have a favorite place. There are so many more restaurants I would love the opportunity to photograph.

5. Do you have somewhere on your list that you want to photograph in Dutchess, but haven’t gotten there yet?

Innisfree Garden!

6. Give us a few photography tips!

The angle of the light is important. For food, I love either a backlight or sidelight. A light coming from the side at a lower angle will pick up the texture of food, or anything for that matter. So if that makes food much more appetizing, it is important. Another thing to pay attention to is seeing the moisture or highlight on the food. It brings dimension and makes it look freshly plated and very desirable.
