Tracking the Militia: Orange County's General John Hathorn And His Men Talk at East Fishkill Historical Society

East Fishkilll Historical Society will host local researcher Sue Gardner for an illustrated talk on the area's Revolutionary War militia.  “Most Obedient Servant: Tracking the Life and Legacy of John Hathorn and his Militia” will discuss Hathorn of Warwick and the service of his men, who were frequently posted at Fishkill. A successful military leader and politician, he served in the first and fourth Congresses of the United States-- yet his life and the lives of those who served under him remained in the shadows due to a succession of fires which destroyed their records.

New research shows his close involvement with the formation of the nation and New York State, and that his men were at all the strategic locations and battles of the mid and lower Hudson Valley. The talk will trace the service of these patriots through primary source documents and show methods used in their discovery.

Sue Gardner is Deputy Town Historian for Warwick, and Local History Librarian at Albert Wisner Public Library also in Warwick. She helped found The Friends of Hathorn House historical society in recent years to help preserve the Hathorn home and honor the legacy of the General, his men, and their families.
