CLINTON VINEYARDS 30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION & LOCUST GROVE ESTATE GARDEN TOUR *
Saturday: June 14, 2008
Get whisked away on the Dutchess County Farm Fresh Link shuttle at Poughkeepsie Station to two of the most beautiful and popular sites in Dutchess County...Clinton Vineyards and Locust Grove, The Samuel Morse Historic Site.
Your first stop is Clinton Vineyards, award-winning producer of fine wines,
champagne and hand-crafted dessert wines. Partake in the festivities celebrating their 30th Anniversary Vintage with music, a tour of the spectacular landscape, and a wine tasting including champagne, white wine, dessert wine and their world famous Cassis. For lunch you can choose from an array of delicious local and artisanal foods, and even take home your favorites. (Tasting fee and tour is $15, and is in addition to the transportation package price. Lunch also requires an additional fee.)
Relax in the intimate tasting room, visit the wine-making facilities in the adjacent historic barn, and stroll around the magnificent estate grounds. After toasting the 30th vintage anniversary, shop the unique mini-farmer’s market set-up just for you!
Then it’s onto The Locust Grove Estate (Samuel Morse National Historic Site) for a garden tour. With its 180 acres, Locust Grove is the largest nature preserve between Cold Spring and Hyde Park, and it is
home to many kinds of fish, wetland creatures and migrating birds.
The tour begins with a video, followed by a guided walk where you’ll enjoy the landscape history and development of the ornamental gardens as they relate to the residents of Locust Grove. Scenic vistas planned by Samuel Morse
reflect his knowledge of painting and landscape architecture. The landscape includes the park surrounding the mansion, formal Victorian display beds, a large perennial garden featuring antique peonies, and an heirloom kitchen garden. There are also over 4 ½ miles of carriage roads and walking trails through the wooded landscape leading to a small lake, cool waterfall, and sunny coves along the Hudson River. Comfortable shoes and clothing are advised. (Garden Tour Fee is $8, and is in addition to the transportation package price.)
